How the world will look like in the future? How the Montenegro will look like? Questions hard to answer, for sure. Still, desired future of Montenegro has been shaped. By the people of Montenegro.

The recently presented Report on Post-2015 National Consultations in Montenegro displays key development challenges for the country’s future, seen from the ordinary people’s angle. The document, which concisely articulates voices of more than 8000 people of Montenegro, is a result of the extensive three-months process of national consultations which gathered, not only 1.3% of country’s population, but also number of organisations, to actively participate in shaping the country’s future development agenda.

This participative consultations process in Montenegro was oraganised within the UN supported global campaign in more than 80 countries around the globe, aiming to include citizens from all parts of the world in creation of Sustainable Development Goals which will follow up on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) after they expire on 2015.

“The UN is encouraging a highly participatory and inclusive approach to formulation of the Post-2015 development agenda and shaping of Sustainable Development Goals. It is vital that the voices of the countries, including Montenegro, are heard in this process”, said Rastislav Vrbensky, UN Resident Coordinator in Montenegro before handing over the document to the Government.

Along with the presentation of the Report, the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism kicked off revision process of the National Strategy of the Sustainable Development, designed six years ago. The Report on Post-2015 national consultations is expected to help Government align revised National Strategy with aspirations of ordinary people.

“The Report is key input for the revision of the National Strategy for Sustainable Development. It will also serve as one of the main instruments for positioning Montenegro in the UN Open Working Group for creating Sustainable Development Goals”, said Minister of Sustainable Development and Tourism, Branimir Gvozdenović emphasizing that the sustainable development is startegic commitment of Montenegro.

“In the UN system, we will do all that we can to put the views expressed throughout the consultations before the UN Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals, and before Member States as they negotiate what follows the MDGs”, added Rastislav Vrbensky.

The UN System in Montenegro will submit the Report on Post-2015 National Consultations in Montenegro to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who will incorporate key findings into the Global Post-2015 Report, which will be discussed by the world leaders on the next UN General Assembly.
